Из sun.misc.VM это Runtime.getRuntime.maxMemory(), то, что настроено с -Xmx. Например если вы не настроите -XX:MaxDirectMemorySize и настроите -Xmx5g, то " MaxDirectMemorySize " по умолчанию также будет 5 Гб, а общее использование кучи + прямая память приложением может возрасти до 5 + 5 = 10 Gb.
